Mmegi Online: Somalia Al Shabaab militants threaten British attack: In a series of eleven posts written by Al Shabaab’s Press Office on its Twitter page, the radical group threatened to inflict on Britain its worst-ever attack.”The nightmare that surreptitiously looms on British shores is bound to eclipse the horrors of 7/7 and 21/7 combined,” said one message.

Waltham Forest Guardian: EDL ‘will still hold protest’despite ban threat: The far-right English Defence League (EDL) and counter protesters say they will still demonstrate in Walthamstow this weekend despite police attempts to ban all marches. The Met Police announced yesterday (Tuesday October 23) it had applied to the Home Secretary to prohibit marches and processions in east London after receiving intelligence that there could be “serious public disorder, violence and damage”. The government is yet to make a decision but it is expected they will agree.

MI5 (Security Services): Northern Ireland-related terrorism threat level downgraded to moderate in Great Britain, but remains severe in N.Ireland. The threat of international terrorism remains ‘substantial’.

Student Rights: London Met university Islamic Society invite extremist speaker: “At London Metropolitan University, the authorities have used this power on a number of occasions to deny individuals the freedom to address students, yet it appears that this may have caused the Islamic Society to begin holding its events off-campus, where it can invite extremist speakers free from scrutiny.”

Comment: The Guardian: David Edgar: Bloody Nasty People by Daniel Trilling – review: The BNP and the EDL are still dangerous. “With a leader as effective as Le Pen père or fille, or even – merely – a leadership which doesn’t issue death threats to each other during election campaigns, might not a new far-right grouping turn its back on violence and gain as much purchase as equivalent parties in continental Europe? One answer to this question is that, for all their ideological contortions, the BNP, the EDL and their various splinters are fascists, and violence is what fascists do. The far right failed to take off as a serious electoral force in the 1970s, and it’s failed again now. But that shouldn’t tempt us to lower our guard.”

Bedford Today: Kevin Carroll, PCC candidate for Bedfordshire, slams ‘preposterous’ arrest: The British Freedom police commissioner candidate arrested at the weekend has claimed the authorities are trying to “silence” him. Senior English Defence League member Kevin Carroll, 43, secured his place in the race to become Bedfordshire Police Commissioner on Friday. But the following day he was arrested by the Metropolitan Police on suspicion of conspiring to cause a public nuisance.

Mr Carroll said: “It’s absolutely preposterous. My name went in on Friday and I’m being arrested on Saturday. It’s all being done to blacken my name because they don’t want me to stand and they’re trying to silence me.”
